It isn’t known how many Manta Rays are left in the world. Due to their diverse habitat and their ability to remain under water it is extremely hard to estimate. However, conservation efforts have been put into place to help reduce the number of them being hunted. In many parts of the world this has gone on for a very long time. There are many different reasons why conservation efforts for the Manta Ray have been put into place. The fact that the young offspring are often very vulnerable for the first couple of years means that many of them may not make it to maturity. However, the Manta Ray seems to be very low on the list of conservation efforts by local governments. There are simply too many other creatures out there that have verified low numbers that are getting attention right now. Hawaii is one area where they don’t allow the Manta Ray to be harmed. While they do allow money to be made by renting diving equipment to tourists to see these animals, precautions are made that ensure people don’t touch them while in the water observing them. In Australia they are also well protected and the population is believed to be thriving there.

One thing that many want to share is that you can step on Manta Rays and injure or kill them without realizing it. When you are wading in the waters close to the shoreline, they may be there. Instead of lifting your feet out of the water and back down, you need to shuffle them forward. This way you are less likely to harm them due to your movements.

With the huge number of people that are in the water on a daily basis, this is very important information to pass along. It can help to save the lives of thousands of small Manta Rays annually. Then they will have the chance to fully mature and to reproduce. This is just one of the small yet significant ways in which your own efforts can improve their chances of survival.

Some governments do have the Manta Ray on their list of endangered species though. This is due to the low rate of reproduction combined with a high mortality rate. A huge problem for them is the exposure to chemicals and toxins in the water. When their bodies are exposed to a variety of bacteria they won’t be able to survive. Even with suckerfish to help remove parasites, illnesses from bacteria can spread too rapidly.

There are many non profit organizations out there dedicated to helping the Manta Ray as well. You can find these specific entities online and decide to join them if you wish. They are always looking for volunteers to help them organize gatherings, to promote awareness, and to help educate the public about steps they can take to protect the Manta Ray. You can even make monetary donations to help support their various causes.

You will find that the type of conservation efforts in place are often geographical in nature. In some parts of the world there is plenty of action going on to help these animals to survive. In many others though their existence doesn’t seem to be important enough to warrant the time or the money for it to occur.
